Bach Ma National Park is a mountain rainforest reserve about 40 km south of Hue, where a 16 km road climbs from the gate at Cau Hai to an old French hill station and the Hai Vong Dai lookout at 1,450 m. A day visit means reaching the summit by vehicle, walking one or two short forest trails to the Five Lakes and Rhododendron Falls, and being back in Hue, Da Nang or Hoi An by evening.
This guide covers the practical side: transport up the mountain, tickets, trails, seasons and weather. It does not cover multi-day treks into the park’s remote interior, which need a separate permit and a ranger.

Bach Ma became a national park on 15 July 1991 and was enlarged to about 37,500 hectares in 2008. It runs from near the coast up to the 1,450 m summit, and because the mountain catches the sea air it is one of the wettest places in Vietnam, often wrapped in cloud. That cloud is where the name comes from: Bach Ma means white horse.
For a visitor, the park is really three things stacked on one road: lowland forest near the gate, the summit area with its French ruins and lookout, and a handful of trails that drop from the summit road into streams and waterfalls.

Seeing all five comfortably takes a full day from Hue. Anyone with half a day should choose the summit and one trail.
Getting there and getting up
The gate is about an hour’s drive from Hue on the coast road, an hour and a half from Da Nang and roughly two hours from Hoi An. From the gate, the only way to the summit area is the 16 km mountain road: cars and minibuses of up to 16 seats may drive it, motorbikes and bigger buses may not.
If you arrive without a suitable vehicle, the park rents its own for the climb, priced per vehicle rather than per person, which is why solo travellers and couples often wait at the gate to share one. Fees and transport rules are covered in detail in the rest of this guide series.
What it costs to visit
Entry is 65,000 VND (~$3) for an adult, bought at the gate. The larger cost is transport: a return car from Hue plus either the park’s summit vehicle or a driver willing to take the mountain road. Food at the summit is simple and should be ordered ahead, because the kitchens cook for the people they expect.

When to go
February to September is the reliable window: trails dry out, the pools are safe to swim in, and March and April bring the rhododendrons. From October to January heavy rain closes the waterfall stairs, swimming stops and the summit is often in cloud. Mornings are clearest in every season.

Can you visit Bach Ma National Park without a tour?
Yes. Take a car or taxi to the gate, buy a ticket, and either rent the park’s vehicle to the summit or walk the 16 km road. A tour saves the arrangements, not access.
How long do you need in Bach Ma?
A full day from Hue sees the summit, the Five Lakes and Rhododendron Falls. Half a day covers the summit and one short trail. Staying overnight is the only way to see sunrise from the top.
Is Bach Ma worth it if it is cloudy?
Often yes, for the forest, streams and waterfalls, which are at their best after rain. The summit view is what you lose, and it can clear within an hour.
Can you swim in Bach Ma?
In the Five Lakes pools from about February to September, when water levels are low. From October to January the streams rise quickly after rain and swimming is unsafe.
